Youth Democracy in the EU Guidebook
This guidebook, created for the Erasmus+ project Up-Root Eco-Democracy, provides a comprehensive overview of democracy and the electoral processes within the European Union, and especially in Sweden, Denmark, Ireland, Portugal and Türkiye. It begins by explaining the concept of democracy, its core principles, and the crucial role of voting in upholding democratic systems. The guide emphasises the importance of youth participation in the democratic process, highlighting how young people can influence political decisions and ensure their interests are represented.
The guidebook delves into the history of democracy in Sweden, Ireland, Denmark, Portugal, and Türkiye, outlining key historical milestones and the current state of their democratic frameworks. It also provides detailed information on the European Union, its formation, objectives, and the role of European Parliament elections, including how many Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) each country elects.
Additionally, the guide offers practical advice on how to vote, explaining different electoral systems such as majoritarian and proportional systems. It describes various methods, including First-Past-the-Post, Two-Round System, Party-List Proportional Representation (both Closed and Open List systems), the D’Hondt Method, and the Single Transferable Vote (STV), providing insights into how these systems function and their impact on election outcomes and political representation.
Sustainable Cities Guidebook
This guidebook, created for the Erasmus+ project Up-Root Eco-Democracy, is a comprehensive resource designed to empower individuals and communities to take meaningful action toward a more sustainable future.
The guidebook begins by exploring the concept of sustainable development, especially the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The guidebook goes on to highlight forms of democratic engagement beyond voting. First, the guidebook looks at citizen’s initiatives, particularly European Citizens’ Initiatives. Then,the guidebook highlights letter writing as a form of lobbying, and provides practical tips on writing a persuasive and effective letter.
